Angel Tree and Toys for Tots 2026: How to Sign Up Before the Deadlines

If you're counting on help with Christmas gifts this year, October is the month that matters. Some Salvation Army Angel Tree programs have already closed for 2026, and many Toys for Tots campaigns opened requests on October 1 with deadlines in November.
This guide explains how each program works, what documents to gather, and where sign-ups stand in Dallas, Houston, Cincinnati, Seattle and New York City. Dates below come from official program pages or local news reports. Where a 2026 date isn't posted, we say so.
2026 Deadlines: What's Open, What's Closed
Sign-up windows are set locally, so the same program can be open in one city and closed in the next. Examples we confirmed:
North Texas (Dallas–Fort Worth) Angel Tree: closed for 2026.
Houston Angel Tree: 2026 season open, registration by ZIP code.
Cincinnati Salvation Army Christmas Assistance: in-person sign-ups by ZIP through October 30.
Metro Phoenix Christmas assistance: registration opened October 1, 2026 (602-267-4100).
Toys for Tots Southern West Virginia: opened October 1, closes November 28 at 10 p.m., no late applications.
Toys for Tots Volusia County, Florida: opened October 1, closes November 1.
The pattern is clear: apply this month. Waiting until December usually means waiting until next year.
How Salvation Army Angel Tree Works
Angel Tree has run since 1979. Once your child is registered and accepted as an "Angel," their first name and wish list go to donors, who buy new clothing and toys. The Salvation Army then gives the gifts to you to put under your own tree. Donors never see your private information.
How to apply
Go to saangeltree.org and enter your ZIP code. If your area uses the online system, you can apply there and upload photos of documents from your phone.
If it says your area isn't served online, contact your local Salvation Army. Many locations still register in person.
Apply in the right place. Big cities like Houston and Cincinnati assign families to locations by ZIP code.
Documents to gather now
The national Angel Tree site says you may be asked for:
Photo ID
Proof of residence, such as a lease, utility bill, or mail from a school district or government agency
For each child: a birth certificate or official custody or guardianship papers
Each child's clothing and shoe sizes and a toy wish
Age limits vary. North Texas covers children 0–14 (plus seniors 65 and up), and some programs go up to 17. North Texas also says Social Security cards are not accepted as proof.
How to Request Toys From Toys for Tots
Toys for Tots, run by the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, has no national application. Requests go through the local campaign for your county.
Go to toysfortots.org and choose "Request a Toy."
Use "Find Your Local Campaign" to pick your county's campaign.
Fill out that campaign's form. Many ask for photo ID, proof of address, and children's birth certificates.
Watch for a confirmation email. Southern West Virginia, for example, sends a control number.
Rules that trip families up
Apply once, in your own county. Pick the correct campaign and don't submit duplicates.
List each child's age as of Christmas if the form asks.
Wish lists aren't guaranteed, and some campaigns don't give electronics.
Name a backup pickup person in case you can't make it on distribution day.
Some big-city campaigns distribute through partner charities instead of directly to families. In Houston, for example, Houston Children's Charity runs a large Toys for Tots-backed distribution.
Where Sign-Ups Stand in Our Hub Cities
Dallas–Fort Worth
The Salvation Army of North Texas says 2026 Angel Tree applications are closed. Registration was online only for children 0–14. If you applied and have questions, call 214-353-4850 (Dallas, Collin, Rockwall and Denton counties) or 817-344-1829 (Tarrant and Ellis counties).
If you missed it, check your county's Toys for Tots campaign right away and call 211 for church toy drives. Our Dallas church and DFW nonprofit guides list groups that help with holiday needs.
Houston
The Salvation Army of Greater Houston's 2026 Angel Tree season is open, and you must register at the location that covers your ZIP code. Houston Children's Charity's 2026 toy applications are also open, first-come, first-served. See our Houston Christmas assistance guide for the full ZIP-code list and phone numbers.
Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky
The Salvation Army registers families in person by ZIP code in short windows between October 9 and October 30. St. Vincent de Paul's Christmas Together form opened October 1 for Hamilton County. See our Cincinnati Christmas assistance guide for every date and address.
Seattle and King County
The Salvation Army Seattle White Center Corps (9050 16th Ave SW) gives toys to children ages 0–17 at Christmas. Registration is in person only, 10 a.m.–noon or 1–3 p.m. Bring ID, proof of residency, proof of income, and proof of children in the household. Call 206-767-3150 to confirm registration days. Elsewhere in King County, contact your nearest Salvation Army corps.
New York City
The Salvation Army Greater New York Division runs Angel Tree at various locations across the city and holds a Christmas Toy Shop for registered families. It doesn't publish a single citywide sign-up date, so call your nearest Salvation Army community center now. For a sense of timing, last year's Staten Island registration ran until October 31.
If You Missed Every Deadline
Call 211. Ask specifically for "Christmas toy drives" and "holiday assistance" near your ZIP code.
Ask your child's school counselor or social worker. Schools often pass families to adopt-a-family programs.
Call large churches and mosques in your area. Many run their own gift and food drives in December.
Ask to be waitlisted. Some programs fill no-show slots.
Don't Go Into Debt for Christmas
Legitimate Angel Tree and Toys for Tots sign-ups don't charge you to apply. Be careful with anyone who asks for a fee to "guarantee" toys. And skip payday loans and buy-now-pay-later plans for gifts. The fees can follow you into January, when rent and heating bills hit hardest. If bills are the real squeeze, our holiday bill help guide lists utility hardship funds that can free up cash.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sign up for both Angel Tree and Toys for Tots?
They are separate programs, so many families apply to both. Follow each program's local rules and be honest on every form.
Is it too late to sign up for Angel Tree in 2026?
It depends on your city. North Texas has closed, while Houston and Cincinnati are still registering in October. Check saangeltree.org with your ZIP code or call your local Salvation Army.
When do Toys for Tots applications close in 2026?
Each campaign sets its own date. Ones we confirmed close between November 1 and November 28. Check your county's campaign page.
Do I need a Social Security card?
Usually not. North Texas specifically says it doesn't accept Social Security cards. Bring photo ID, proof of address and birth certificates instead.
