Sacramento Free Tax Prep 2027: Where to File Your 2026 Return for Free

1 day ago
5 min read

It's October, so filing season is still months away. Now is a good time to plan. Free tax help in the Sacramento area fills up fast once it opens. The households who get appointments are usually the ones who knew which program to use and had their paperwork ready in January.

This guide covers three free routes for the 2027 filing season (your tax year 2026 return):

  1. United Way California Capital Region's Free Tax Prep program, for households earning under $68,000.

  2. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, with free in-person help focused on people 50 and older.

  3. IRS VITA and TCE sites you can find with the IRS locator.

For each one, you'll see who it's for, how it works, and what's confirmed for 2027 so far.

Last checked October 2026. Facts come from United Way California Capital Region's Free Tax Preparation page, Tax-Aide of South Sacramento (AARP Foundation Tax-Aide), and the IRS's VITA/TCE page. 2027 opening dates are listed only where a program has announced them. This is general information, not tax advice.

First, Which Route Fits You?

  • Working household earning under $68,000, comfortable uploading documents: United Way's Free Tax Prep.

  • 50 or older, or prefer sitting down with a volunteer in South Sacramento or Elk Grove: Tax-Aide of South Sacramento.

  • Anyone looking for a VITA site near home or work, or 60+ with pension or retirement questions: the IRS VITA/TCE locator.

  • Earn more than $68,000: United Way points you to MyFreeTaxes, a free self-filing option.

Route 1: United Way California Capital Region Free Tax Prep

Who it's for

United Way says households earning less than $68,000 can get free tax help. The program serves Sacramento, Yolo, Amador, El Dorado, and Placer counties, plus Yuba-Sutter and Colusa. It runs in partnership with the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC) campaign.

How it works (per United Way)

  1. Fill out an online questionnaire and upload your documents. United Way says this can take as little as 30 minutes. Choose the "I need assistance" option. The site is in English or Spanish.

  2. A volunteer calls you within two to three days to review your information and prepare your return. You can ask for help in English, Spanish, or Russian.

  3. A second volunteer calls to go over your tax packet and confirm everything is correct before filing.

United Way also offers a self-preparation option if you'd rather file on your own for free. Its page has said both that it offers in-person and virtual help and that no in-person appointments were available for the season. Expect the process to be mostly virtual, and check the page in January for 2027 details.

What United Way says you'll need

  • your driver's license or other photo ID;

  • your Social Security card;

  • W-2s, 1099s, or other earned income statements;

  • last year's tax return;

  • Social Security cards for your dependents;

  • child care records;

  • medical expenses;

  • education expenses.

Why it's worth it

United Way says clients save an average of $200 in preparation fees. Its volunteers help households claim the CalEITC, the Young Child Tax Credit, and the federal EITC. United Way reports helping about 9,000 families in a recent season claim more than $11 million in credits.

Route 2: AARP Foundation Tax-Aide of South Sacramento

Who it's for

Tax-Aide of South Sacramento says it provides free tax help to anyone, with a focus on taxpayers 50 or older with low to moderate income. Its IRS-certified volunteers helped more than 2,000 taxpayers at nine locations last season.

2027 opening date: confirmed

Tax-Aide of South Sacramento says it will begin accepting online appointments for the tax year 2026 filing season on January 15, 2027. Its 2026 season ended April 15, 2026.

Put January 15, 2027 on your calendar. Book that day if you can.

Where (2026 season locations)

The group listed these sites last season. Confirm the 2027 list when booking:

  • Ethel Hart Senior Center

  • Robbie Waters Pocket-Greenhaven Library and Asian Community Center

  • Cedarwood MHP

  • Valley Hi-North Laguna Library

  • Elk Grove Aquatics Center

  • Elk Grove City Council Chambers

  • Grace Church of Elk Grove

  • St. John Vianney

Problems with a return Tax-Aide filed

If Tax-Aide prepared your return and something went wrong, such as an IRS letter, an error, or a needed amendment, the group lists (916) 720-9038 and help@ca41taxaide.org. It says it usually responds within three business days. If you can't reach them, AARP's line is 1-888-687-2277 (1-888-OUR-AARP), Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. PT.

Route 3: Any IRS VITA or TCE Site

What VITA and TCE are

The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free basic tax preparation. Sites are run by IRS partners and staffed by IRS-certified volunteers.

Who VITA serves, per the IRS: The IRS doesn't set a single income limit, and individual sites can set their own. VITA generally serves people who meet EITC income guidelines. Many sites help:

  • people who generally make about $70,244 or less;

  • people with disabilities;

  • taxpayers with limited English.

TCE focuses on people 60 and older, especially pension and retirement questions. The IRS says most TCE sites are run by AARP Foundation Tax-Aide.

How to find one

  • IRS VITA Locator Tool on irs.gov, or call 800-906-9887.

  • AARP Tax-Aide Site Locator, or call 888-227-7669. The IRS says this locator is updated regularly from February through April.

  • 2-1-1 Sacramento keeps a list of VITA tax sites.

A January Checklist

Gather these before your program opens so you can book and file in one sitting:

  • [ ] Photo ID for you (and your spouse if filing jointly)

  • [ ] Social Security cards or ITIN letters for everyone on the return

  • [ ] All W-2s and 1099s, including gig work, unemployment, and Social Security statements

  • [ ] Last year's return

  • [ ] Child care provider's name, address, tax ID, and amount paid

  • [ ] Education forms and medical expenses

  • [ ] Your bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit

  • [ ] For joint returns: confirm both spouses can be present or sign as required

Tip: United Way lists dependents' Social Security cards as required. If you can't find one, start replacing it now.

Watch for Paid "Refund" Products

If you're expecting a large EITC or CalEITC refund, some paid preparers will offer a "refund advance" or charge fees taken out of your refund. United Way's free program says it saves clients about $200 on average in fees. Free volunteer programs file the same credits without those charges.
