Charlotte Free Tax Prep 2027: Free Tax Prep Meck Sites, VITA Latino, Year-Round Help and What to Bring

6 min read

A paid tax preparer in Charlotte can charge more for a basic return than many families spend on groceries in a week. If your household earns under roughly $68,000, you can probably skip that bill. Free Tax Prep Meck, run through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, prepares returns at no cost at libraries, churches and community centers around Mecklenburg County. And it doesn't fully shut down after April.

Here's what last season looked like, what to expect for the 2027 filing season, how to get help with a back-year return right now, and exactly what to bring.

Last checked October 2026. Sources: Ada Jenkins Center's Year Round Tax Help page, Crisis Assistance Ministry's February 2026 "VITA Free Tax Prep Meck" post, VITA Latino's 2026 site page and home page, and IRS pages on free tax preparation and Free File. Sites and dates for the 2027 season had not been posted when we checked.

The Short Version

  • Who: Free Tax Prep Meck serves people with low to moderate income. Ada Jenkins Center's current page says annual income below $68,000; the 2026 season announcement said $69,000 or less. Limited-English taxpayers are served too.

  • 2027 season: sites and dates aren't posted yet. In 2026, most sites ran from early February to late March or April 15.

  • Right now (fall 2026): year-round help for prior-year and current-year returns, by appointment, once a month, plus a drop-off option.

  • Spanish: VITA Latino (Buenas Finanzas Carolinas/Common Wealth Charlotte). Its 2026 limit was $67,000, or $134,000 married filing jointly.

  • Appointments and questions: Ada Jenkins Center, 704-896-0471 ext. 140.

  • File yourself: IRS Free File guided software is free if your adjusted gross income is $89,000 or less.

What Free Tax Prep Meck Is

Free Tax Prep Meck is Mecklenburg County's VITA network. Ada Jenkins Center, a nonprofit based in Davidson, manages the sites, and partners like Crisis Assistance Ministry help get the word out.

Every return is prepared by IRS-certified volunteers. Crisis Assistance Ministry's 2026 announcement says each volunteer goes through tax law training that meets or exceeds IRS standards and that every return gets a quality review before it's filed. Returns are filed electronically, which the post notes is the fastest way to get a refund.

Volunteers are also trained to look for credits people miss, like the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit. For a working family, those credits can be the biggest number on the return.

Income limits, and why they differ

You'll see three numbers floating around:

  • $68,000: Ada Jenkins Center's current Year Round Tax Help page

  • $69,000: the 2026 season announcement

  • About $70,244: the IRS's general VITA guideline, which each site can adjust

If you're near the line, call 704-896-0471 ext. 140 and ask before you make the trip.

Last Season's Sites (2026)

These were the Free Tax Prep Meck locations listed as of February 1, 2026. Expect many to return in 2027, but check dates before you go.

| Site | 2026 dates | Notes | |---|---|---| | Ada Jenkins Center (Davidson) | Feb. 7 – April 15 | February appointments filled; walk-ins only in March and April | | North County Regional Library (Huntersville) | Feb. 7 – April 11 | | | Sugar Creek Library | Feb. 7 – March 28 | | | West Blvd Library | Feb. 7 – March 28 | | | Allegra Westbrooks Library | Feb. 7 – March 28 | | | Chosen City Church | Feb. 7 – March 28 | Appointments in February; walk-ins later | | Levine Senior Center | Feb. 2 – April 15 | Appointments only in February and March: 704-846-4654 |

Tax-a-thon Saturdays

In 2026, one Saturday a month was set aside for walk-in-only service, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.:

  • Feb. 21 (past-year returns): Myers Park Presbyterian Church, 2501 Oxford Pl.

  • March 14 (current and past-year): Goodwill Industries of Southern Piedmont, 5301 Wilkinson Blvd.

  • April 11 (current-year): Ascend Nonprofit Solutions, 601 E. 5th St.

Several regular sites closed on those Saturdays, so the tax-a-thon was the place to go that day.

A tip from last season

At Ada Jenkins Center, every February appointment was booked by the time of the Feb. 1 announcement. If you want an appointment rather than waiting in a walk-in line, call as soon as 2027 scheduling opens, likely in January.

Year-Round Help: Behind on Taxes?

You don't have to wait for February. Ada Jenkins Center says Free Tax Prep Meck offers help with prior-year and current-year returns all year:

  • Once a month, by appointment only

  • A drop-off service, also by appointment: you bring your documents, volunteers prepare the return, and within about a week you come back to pick up your documents and finish your return

This is a good fit if you skipped filing for a year and are owed a refund, or if you need an old return to apply for financial aid, a mortgage or a benefit program. Call 704-896-0471 ext. 140 to book.

Free Help in Spanish: VITA Latino

VITA Latino is the Spanish-language free tax program run by Buenas Finanzas Carolinas, a service of the nonprofit Common Wealth Charlotte. Ada Jenkins Center says VITA Latino prepares returns by appointment only under the same rules.

Its 2026 site page for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library South Blvd. location listed these requirements:

  • Annual income up to $67,000, or $134,000 married filing jointly

  • A Social Security number or ITIN

  • A current photo ID

  • One appointment per person. A married couple filing jointly needs only one.

Buenas Finanzas Carolinas is at 5301 Wilkinson Blvd., Charlotte, 980-338-1768. Its site also lists financial coaching and education workshops.

What to Bring

Ada Jenkins Center lists three items as required:

  1. Photo ID for you and your spouse: driver's license, state ID or passport

  2. Social Security cards (or an SSA-1099) for you, your spouse and all dependents. An ITIN letter can substitute if someone doesn't have an SSN.

  3. A voided check or your online banking info for direct deposit (routing and account numbers)

Also bring, if they apply:

  • Birth dates for everyone on the return

  • W-2s, W-2Gs, 1099-Rs and 1099-MISCs from every employer or payer

  • SSA-1099 Social Security benefit statements

  • Bank interest and dividend statements (Forms 1099)

  • Child care costs and the provider's tax ID number (SSN or EIN)

  • Form 1095-A if you had Marketplace health insurance

  • Last year's federal and state returns, if you have them

  • IRS or state income transcripts, if applicable

  • Proof of foreign status, if you're applying for an ITIN

Married filing jointly? Both spouses must be present to sign for an e-filed return.

What Volunteers Can't Do

Ada Jenkins Center says some returns are outside the program. It won't prepare returns with:

  • Rental income or the sale of investment property

  • Electric vehicle or solar tax credits

  • An open bankruptcy

It also says it may not be able to complete the other state's return if you moved to North or South Carolina from another state during the year.

If your return falls outside these limits, you may need a paid preparer. Ask the volunteers before your appointment if you're unsure, so you don't wait in line for a return they can't do.

Prefer to File Yourself?

The IRS Free File program offers guided tax software from IRS partner companies at no cost if your adjusted gross income is $89,000 or less. The IRS says some partners also include free state filing and Spanish versions. Use the IRS's own Free File page to reach these offers, not a search ad.

Quick Checklist

  1. Income under ~$68,000? You likely qualify for Free Tax Prep Meck.

  2. Behind on a past return? Book year-round help now: 704-896-0471 ext. 140.

  3. For 2027: watch for new sites in January and book early.

  4. Spanish speaker? Contact VITA Latino.

  5. Gather documents now, especially Social Security cards and a voided check.

What we couldn't confirm: 2027-season sites, dates and income limits weren't posted, so the site list reflects 2026. Ada Jenkins Center's main VITA page returned not found. VITA Latino's 2027 sites and its full 2026 site list weren't captured. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide's Charlotte-area sites weren't available because its locator was closed for the season.
