Chicago Holiday Help 2026: Angel Tree by ZIP Code, Holiday Food, and LIHEAP Heat Help
For Chicago families on a tight budget, holiday help comes from a few places: Salvation Army Angel Tree programs run by neighborhood corps, food pantries through the Greater Chicago Food Depository network, and the state's LIHEAP heating assistance, which opens to many households in October and November 2026. Cutting your heating bill can free up money for the rest of the season.
In Chicago, where you live matters. Several Salvation Army Angel Tree programs serve only specific ZIP codes. This guide shows how to find the right one.
Last checked October 2026. Sign-up windows and ZIP code lists can change. Confirm with the program before you go.
Salvation Army Angel Tree in Chicago
The Salvation Army says it identifies families in need through its corps community centers and social service programs. Donors then buy gifts for children, teens, and seniors in the program.
Each corps serves certain ZIP codes. Here's what the Salvation Army has posted for two Chicago programs:
West 24th Street Corps (LaVillita)
ZIP codes served: 60608, 60623, and 60616
Apply: Online through the corps' Angel Tree application, or virtually at saangel.org
Chicago Midway Citadel
ZIP codes served: 60632 and 60638
Gift pickup: Curbside at The Salvation Army Midway Citadel, 5036-52 W. 47th Street, Chicago, IL 60638
Apply: Online through the Midway Angel Tree registration page
Outside these ZIP codes? Both pages say to call 773-205-3690 or email your city, state, and ZIP code to USCMET.AngelTree@usc.salvationarmy.org to find the right location.
The Freedom Center (Harbor Light) also posts Angel Tree sign-up events. Its listed phone is 312-667-2200.
Note: A Salvation Army page lists a registration window ending in early December, but the weekdays it gives don't match the 2026 calendar, so we haven't listed the dates. Apply early, since slots can fill.
What You'll Likely Need
Requirements vary by corps. Before you apply or go to an in-person sign-up, ask what to bring. Programs commonly ask for:
Photo ID for the parent or guardian
Proof of address in a ZIP code the corps serves
Proof of each child's age, such as birth certificates or medical cards
Proof of income or benefits
Keep copies and any confirmation number.
Toys for Tots and Other Toy Programs
Marine Toys for Tots also gives toys through local partner agencies. Our national guide below explains how Toys for Tots and Angel Tree sign-ups usually work, and how to avoid fake sign-up sites.
Also ask your child's school, your alderman's office, local churches, and park district field houses about toy giveaways.
Holiday Food Help
The Greater Chicago Food Depository works through a network of partner pantries. Its Find Food page helps you locate pantries near you, and it also offers free help applying for SNAP (Link), Medicaid, and other benefits.
Tips:
Pantry hours often change around Thanksgiving and Christmas, so call first.
If your SNAP application is stuck, see our Chicago SNAP-delay guide below.
