CalFresh Delayed in Los Angeles? How to Get Food Now and Expedited Benefits in 3 Days (2026–27)
Applied for CalFresh in Los Angeles County and still waiting? You don't have to go hungry while the paperwork moves. Many households qualify for Expedited CalFresh, which LA County's Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) says can arrive within three days, sometimes the same day. And the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank's partner pantries can help today.
This guide covers both, plus what to do if your benefits are late.
Last checked October 2026. Phone hours and rules change, so confirm with DPSS before you go.

Call a pantry before you go when you can, since hours and requirements vary.
Ask for Expedited CalFresh
DPSS says you may get Expedited CalFresh (ES) within three days, or as early as the same day your application is received, if you meet one of these:
Your combined gross monthly income and cash resources are less than your monthly rent or mortgage plus utilities, or
Your household has less than $150 in gross monthly income and $100 or less in cash resources, or
Someone in your household is a destitute migrant or seasonal farmworker with $100 or less in cash resources.
What you need
An interview. You may be interviewed the same day you apply, or a phone interview will be scheduled within three days. DPSS says you can call any time before your scheduled appointment.
Identity verification. A photo ID isn't required. DPSS says it will make reasonable efforts to help verify your identity, including calling someone you know or checking available records.
How to apply
Online: benefitscal.com, which DPSS calls the easiest and quickest way to apply
By phone: 866-613-3777. Press option 2 ("Apply for Benefits"), then option 2 again ("CalFresh Apply") to reach a worker.
In person: any DPSS District Office or outreach site, or a drop box at a district office
By mail to a district office, or fax to 310-215-8220
At a minimum, your application needs your full name, address (people experiencing homelessness can use a district office address) and a signature. Submitting even a partial application starts the clock, so don't wait until you've gathered every document.
The DPSS Customer Service Center is open Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and closed weekends and county holidays.
If Your Expedited Benefits Haven't Arrived
DPSS says that if you qualify for expedited service and haven't received benefits within three days, you should call 866-613-3777. Your EBT card will be mailed, or you can pick it up at a district office, which can be faster if mail is slow.
If you didn't qualify for expedited service, regular applications follow the standard federal timeline of up to 30 days.
When a regular application stalls
Check BenefitsCal for messages or requests for documents.
Call the Customer Service Center to confirm your interview date and ask what's missing.
Keep copies of everything you submit and write down the date and the name of anyone you speak with.
Who Can Get CalFresh in LA County
DPSS says you may be eligible if you:
Get CalWORKs or General Relief
Have low or no income and limited property
Receive SSI/SSP (eligible in California since June 1, 2019)
Are a U.S. citizen, legal resident or an immigrant who meets certain criteria
If you're not eligible because of immigration status
The California Food Assistance Program (CFAP) provides state-funded food benefits to people who don't qualify for CalFresh solely because of their immigration status. Benefits are the same as CalFresh. DPSS strongly encourages applicants to disclose immigration status on the application or at the interview to avoid delays or wrongful denials.
T-Visa and U-Visa holders and VAWA self-petitioners don't need to provide a Social Security number to apply, though they must meet other rules.
New Work Rules in 2026
DPSS says that beginning June 1, 2026, some adults ages 18 to 64 may need to meet work requirements to keep CalFresh for more than 3 months in a 36-month period, unless they're exempt. If you got a notice about work rules, check the DPSS CalFresh Work Rules page or ask your worker about exemptions.
How Much You Could Get
Benefits depend on household size, income and expenses. DPSS notes that the minimum monthly CalFresh benefit for federal fiscal year 2026–27 is $25 for a household of one or two people. You can use your EBT card at grocery stores and participating farmers markets. People who are homeless, elderly or disabled may also buy prepared meals at participating restaurants.
