Atlanta Free Tax Prep 2027: United Way VITA Sites, the $69,000 Limit, Drop-Off Options and What to Bring
Every spring, storefront tax shops pop up along Atlanta's busiest corridors, and many charge well over a hundred dollars to file a simple return. A lot of their customers could have filed for nothing. United Way of Greater Atlanta and dozens of partner groups run free, IRS-certified tax preparation across 13 metro counties, and the income limit is high enough to cover most working families.
United Way says its free tax services helped 12,000 families across Greater Atlanta save $25 million in a single year, counting both avoided filing fees and refunds. It also says only about 4% of people who qualify for free filing nationally actually use it. This guide explains who can use the free sites, the different ways they work, how to file online if you earn more, and exactly what to bring.
A note on dates: As of mid-October 2026, United Way hasn't announced its schedule or income limit for the 2027 filing season. The details below are from the 2026 season, the latest available. The program returns each year, but the site list, hours and limit can change. Check United Way's VITA page in January before you go.

Who Can Use United Way's Free Tax Sites
United Way of Greater Atlanta runs its program through the IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, working with community organizations across the region. For the 2026 season, United Way said anyone making up to $69,000 could have their return prepared for free, in person or online.
The volunteers are trained and certified by the IRS. Every return goes through a quality review before it's filed. That second check matters, because mistakes on credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit are a common reason refunds get delayed.
Volunteer sites are built for everyday returns. If yours is unusually complicated, the site may not be able to take it, so call ahead if you're unsure.
Four Ways to Get Your Return Done
United Way's site map describes several service types. Knowing the difference saves time, because not every site works the same way.
Classic VITA. You stay at the site while a certified volunteer prepares your return, then it goes through quality review and gets filed. United Way says this can take 45 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on how complicated your taxes are. Some Classic sites take walk-ins and others require appointments, so check before you go.
Leave & Retrieve. You come in for an intake interview of about 20 to 30 minutes and leave your documents. Volunteers at that site prepare the return while you're gone. You come back a few hours later or on another day to go over it and pick up your papers.
Doc Drop & Go. This is the fastest visit. You do the 20- to 30-minute intake, staff scan your documents into a secure portal, and you leave. A preparer at another VITA site works on your return, and someone contacts you by phone or online to go over it before it's filed. United Way says these sites are walk-in only and returns typically take 7 to 10 days.
100% virtual. In past seasons, United Way offered fully virtual prep through GetYourRefund, where you upload documents from home. United Way's page says this option closed for the 2026 season. Watch for whether it reopens for 2027.

United Way's 2026 map listed dozens of sites. Here's a sample of locations in and near the city, grouped by county. These were active for the 2026 season. Use United Way's site map or its VITA page for current addresses, hours and appointment rules before you go.

Earn More Than $69,000? File Online for Free
If your income is over the VITA limit, you still don't have to pay.
MyFreeTaxes.com. United Way's partnership with MyFreeTaxes lets people who earned less than $89,000 file both their federal and state returns online for free, with help available if you get stuck. Since Georgia has a state income tax, getting the state return included at no cost is a real advantage.
IRS Free File. The IRS's own Free File program offers guided tax software for people with an adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less. Be careful: the IRS warns that some Free File partners may charge to prepare a state return, so read each provider's terms before you start. The IRS also offers Free File Fillable Forms with no income limit, but those are basically blank electronic forms with little guidance.
What to Bring
Bringing the wrong papers is the most common reason people get sent home. This list combines United Way's own requirements with the IRS checklist. Bring documents for you, your spouse and everyone you're claiming.
Identification
A valid photo ID for you (and your spouse, if filing jointly)
A Social Security card for each family member. United Way prefers originals and says copies may be accepted at the preparer's discretion
ITIN letters for anyone without an SSN, and your IP PIN letter if the IRS assigned you one
Income
All your W-2s. United Way is clear that pay stubs are not accepted in place of a W-2
All 1099 forms for other income, such as contract work, unemployment, Social Security, pensions or interest
Any document showing money you got from the IRS
Credits and health coverage
Form 1095-A, if you had a Marketplace health plan and got the premium tax credit
A letter from your child care provider (United Way supplies a template)
Form 1098-T for college costs, if you have one
Other
Last year's tax return, if you have it
Your bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit, such as a voided check or a statement showing the routing number
Filing jointly? United Way says every adult listed on the return must sign it, and the IRS says both spouses must be present to sign before a joint return can be e-filed. Plan to go together.
Why It's Worth It: The EITC
United Way points out that an estimated 20% of people eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit don't claim it. The EITC is a refundable credit for working people with low to moderate incomes, and for many families it's the biggest part of their refund.
For tax year 2025 (returns filed in 2026), the IRS listed these maximum credits and income limits:
| Qualifying children | Maximum credit | Income limit (single or head of household) | Income limit (married filing jointly) | |---|---|---|---| | None | $649 | $19,104 | $26,214 | | 1 | $4,328 | $50,434 | $57,554 | | 2 | $7,152 | $57,310 | $64,430 | | 3 or more | $8,046 | $61,555 | $68,675 |
Investment income also had to be $11,950 or less. The IRS hadn't posted the tax year 2026 figures, for returns filed in 2027, when we checked. They usually go up a little each year. You don't have to figure this out yourself. The volunteers will check whether you qualify.
Tips for a Smooth Visit
Wait until you have every form. United Way requires all your W-2s, and a return filed without one may have to be fixed later.
Check the site type. A Doc Drop & Go site won't hand you a finished return the same day.
Bring a complete set of documents for everyone. A missing Social Security card for one child can stall the whole return.
